Museum:

Augmented Reality (AR) use in Informal Learning Environment

Museums have a history of serving as informal learning environments for people of all ages. The primary incentive for museum visits is to acquire knowledge and fresh insights (Packer & Ballantyne, 2002). However, teenagers face various obstacles in engaging with museum exhibits, such as low accessibility and outdated content. Practical learning tools are indispensable for teenagers to engage more effectively in museum visits.
Our team is dedicated to designing an augmented reality (AR) application that immerses teenagers in art museums and reinforces their understanding of art history.

Why did we make this product?
79% of Teenage Museum Visitors face these problems.

Museum learning experiences can be more interactive.

Always feel disconnected, lost, and frustrated in big museums.

Cannot find the way to the artwork they’re interested in.

Want to share their thoughts on social platforms.

💪

Our team distributed work and had weekly meetings. Based on our interview, I created a user story map and ideations.

Testing Feedback

We tested the app on six teenage users, and got some valuable advices. We modified the design according to the Usability Test.

“The scan function is helpful. But I think it can be bigger since it’s hard for us to find it now.”

︎

We elevated the visibility of the scan feature. Now, immediately upon launching the app, users are greeted with the scan functio prominently displayed on the home page, housed within an eye-catching banner to ensure it's both noticed and accessible.

“ I believe that seeing comments from friends could be an incentive for me to scan the art piece.”

︎

Accordingly, we integrated a comment feature within the scanning function to allow users to view their friends' remarks on artworks directly.

I’m interested in creating shareable social media images or videos like Tik Tok and Instagram.

︎

Our initial tool bar didn’t include community function. Responsive to user feedback, our updated tool-bar now features a community function that supports content creation, commenting, liking, reposting, profile reviews, following, and direct messaging, fosterin a richer, more connected user experience.

“As a museum visitor, I don’t want to attract attention for automatic video play similar to TikTok.”

︎

Initial community feature: similar TikTok, videos begin to play automatically as soon as users arrive on the community page. Since museum is a public space, we introduced an intermediary page that allows users to select when they are ready to view videos or explore posts.
